sometimes
Diamond smelled like an airport fragrance - impossible to place but always reminded me of going somewhere. Sometimes if you’re lucky, you’ll want someone the second you meet them. Sometimes they’ll feel the same and act on it. The night I met Diamond, I was at the top of the stairs opening the door for her. She came in and we just stood there nose to nose, nobody moved or said anything. Just noses. It was wonderful, I could have closed my eyes and lived there right then. My whole body was relaxed and nobody said anything and she didn’t back down and I didn’t move, so it kept going. All the code was being sent out into the air. When we finally kissed, her mouth was warm and wet and her top lip smelled like cinnamon. We just stood there for a few minutes kissing having just met that second. There was no rush to get anywhere in it. Sometimes it’s just nice to enjoy a soft mouth.
“Nice to meet you, nice…lol”
she laughed at me.
“Dopamine is sleeping, did you want me to wake her up?”
I asked, trying to convey as little feeling as possible. But I knew Dopamine was awake, sitting in her room scrolling while wearing her ex’s boxers. But something inside me told me to stay with this moment. Before I could do anything else, Diamond yelled over my shoulder towards downstairs.
“MINA, I DID IT YOU WERE RIGHT… ” she laughed, almost into my face as we stood so closely together still.
Dopamine’s bedroom door opened and she walked out barefoot wearing a blank expression on her face.
“I told you, it’s not a big deal - he’s like this with everyone.” Dopamine said
“He didn’t even Introduce himself, we didn’t say anything”
“I know he did the same thing to Linda this morning”
“Linda from Smash Studios?”
“No Linda the drummer”
Dopamine was walking up the stairs towards us, ignoring me mostly as the girls continued to banter about nothing, back and forth. I could barely understand what they were saying. Names and places, names and places. Who cares.
“He could fall in love with a dead deer, I swear it” Dopamine said gently now standing just behind me, I didn’t look back towards her.
I gave Diamond another big kiss, and she kissed back with a different type of force - doing the tongue twists, that jaw thing timed perfectly like a baking machine - like you’re kneading dough with your mouth. The girls kept talking as I headed downstairs to make a drink. There was an open gram of cocaine on the marble counter so I dumped it out and cut three lines.
Diamond and Dopamine came into the kitchen together, and without speaking knelt down to take their line.
“Since you’re already down there…think maybe it’s time?”
They smiled at me, as I pulled open the small wooden trap door that led to the candle lit hole under the kitchen. They climbed in, and I closed it up behind them. I was feeling good - that kiss was like an ice bath - my mouth was warm, and the house was quiet.
